ADHD Dad Blog
Better Late Than NeverA blog about learning to love your adult ADHD and being a loving, creative, understanding dad.by Frank South Recent Blog Posts
Can I cope with moving across the country, getting the house organized, and my aging parents’ health -- without losing my temper? The one-month hiatus I was planning to take from my ADDitude blog while I moved with my family from Hawaii to Georgia stretched into three months when my parents faced a life-changing crisis. And even though the idea of me pitching in to help is enough to send any sane person running for cover, I pitched in as best I could...Continue Reading »
…but, in the midst of all the chaos, I'm learning how to handle change, small step by small step. “The world is what you make of it, friend. If it doesn't fit, you make alterations.” -Stella in “Silverado” (Lawrence & Mark Kasdan) Moving day is fast approaching and everyone in my family is handling the increasing tension differently. My wife Margaret, the only one in our house not diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), and our 14-year-old ADD/ADHD daughter, Coco are in the living room...Continue Reading »
Sometimes it seems that my attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) family dynamics consist of perpetual anxiety, flaring tempers, and tension butting up against tension, but then my wife, son, daughter, and even I surprise myself -- by continuing get along. The Kids Are All Right “I know I gotta get away. And I know if I don’t, I’ll go out of my mind.” - Pete Townsend My wife Margaret, my 14-year-old attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) daughter Coco, and I have just finished dinner, and I’m halfway out of the kitchen when Coco grabs my arm and stops me. “Dad, you shouldn’t worry so much,” she says. My...Continue Reading »
What qualities do you look for in a therapist to treat your attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD)? My past shrinks have included the dream dissector, the distant judge, the clinical diagnostic, and the nervous Nellie (with whom I terrified with my ADD/ADHD and comorbidities) -- each was ultimately ineffective. So, as I mentioned in my last post, in two months my non-ADD/ADHD wife, two ADD/ADHD kids, our big dog, and my rattled, ADHD self are packing up our life and leaving Hawaii after living here for ten years and moving to Georgia to be closer to our elderly parents and the rest of both sides of the extended family. Outwardly I’m doing fine -- got...Continue Reading »
The ADD/ADHD in me isn't ready to move, can't accept change -- and certainly doesn't want to find a new therapist! I've spent some time with my therapist lately working on my (probably) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) symptom: aversion to change. We’ve talked about ways to handle the sense of being suddenly overwhelmed by a world that won’t stay still long enough for me to see what’s going on. We’ve also talked through dealing with the rage I experience toward people and things...Continue Reading »
Roles reverse when a doctor seeks his patient's advice about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). In last week’s post I left off in the middle of a routine physical with my general practitioner, a pleasant soft-spoken guy. He’s quizzing me in depth about my ADHD history -- when I was diagnosed, my symptoms, treatment history, my meds, and my reaction to them, other psychological symptoms, and the disorder’s effect on my education, and other life hurdles. Since I’m not here with...Continue Reading »
When attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) hits close to home, a doctor turns to ADDitude's blogger for advice on all things diagnosis and treatment, from symptoms to medications and side effects. I’m in the doctor’s office for my yearly physical which with I manage to get every three or four years, or sometimes five. I don’t trust most doctors. At least when they’re in their offices or the hospital. They just seem like detached bearers of bad news and pain. Lucky for me I’m a pretty healthy guy -- if you put aside...Continue Reading »
A look at how people perceive -- and stereotype -- those with ADHD, and the reality of living within and beyond mental health labels like "normal" and "crazy." “Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?” - Groucho Marx “I’m concerned that you are possibly misrepresenting yourself, or at the least exaggerating some small problem for dramatic effect.” It’s the end of an exhausting three days of passionate self expression and concentrated listening at an autobiographical writing and critique group, where I just read my story about living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder...Continue Reading »
This ADHD public speaker living with comorbid Bipolar 2 learns how to share what it's like living with attention deficit disorder without having to lecture his audience. “If you want to know where your heart is, look where your mind wanders.” -- Unknown One, I know where my heart is. Two, my mind doesn’t wander. At night, using the distracting cover of dreams, my mind makes plans and plots quietly in secret. Then, sometime during the day when my guard is down, and when it can do the most damage, my mind breaks out...Continue Reading »
My ADHD daughter wants to get away from all the social pressure and craziness of middle school and study at home until she starts high school. My 14 year-old daughter brought her report card home last night, and it’s fine – one A, the rest Bs, and two Cs. If I’d had a report card like that at her age I would have strutted home with banners flying in front of a brass band. But Coco’s not proud at all. She’s miserable. She buries her head in a pillow crying...Continue Reading » « All Blogs |
